The Convenience Stores and Newsagents Association (CSNA) has called on the government to deliver targeted relief from the severe spike in fuel prices that has occurred and its impact on forecourt retailers, by reducing excise duty.

The association believes “an initial decrease of 20c per litre is merited at this time in order to lessen the impact of these unprecedented international price increases and to stabilise the current situation locally”.

The CSNA adds that its members have reported a steep decline in forecourt store purchases over the past week, due to the increase in fuel prices. In essence, the motorist must prioritise the fuel purchase and the shops are suffering as a result.

The association has written to Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Leo Varadkar, to discuss this important issue in person

The CSNA noted that it fully supports the government’s efforts here and those of the EU, in showing solidarity with the people of Ukraine and equally in condemning unequivocally the outrageous action by Russia over its unwarranted and barbaric attack on an independent sovereign state.
