Ahead of Coeliac Awareness Week, which is taking place nationwide between 8th and 15th May, the Coeliac Society of Ireland is calling for retailers around the country to commit to stocking a minimum of eight staple food products that are gluten-free, all year round.

Coeliac Awareness Week is sponsored by Ireland’s leading grocery retailer, SuperValu, which became the first company to commit to the Society’s Gluten Free Promise.

“There is a lot of confusion among the public about Coeliac Disease,” says Fergal O’Sullivan, CEO of the Coeliac Society, “what its symptoms are and its seriousness. The only treatment is to follow a gluten-free diet.

“When it comes to food shopping, many people with the disease have difficulty searching for gluten-free essentials. This Coeliac Awareness Week, we’re calling on all supermarkets to help all people with Coeliac Disease to manage their gluten-free diet by stocking gluten-free products in their stores.

“This will have an enormous impact on the lives of those living with the disease. We’re calling it the Gluten Free Promise.”
