New figures released by Bord Bia for the month of March show a

. Chicken is considered a healthy, value option, according to the food agency, and has become increasingly popular in the current economic climate.

Bord Bia has also launched a nationwide campaign to encourage consumers to look for the Bord Bia quality mark when purchasing chicken, reinforcing the quality positioning of Irish poultry.

Aidan Cotter, CEO, Bord Bia commented: “Poultry meat consumption accounts for almost 30% of total meat consumed in Ireland, however imports continue to exert downward pressure on the indigenous Irish poultry industry.

"There are currently over 700 producers and seven major chicken processors participating in our Poultry Quality Assurance Scheme and we estimate that 98% of all chicken produced in Ireland now falls within the scheme.”
