Centra is encouraging people to support patients affected by breast cancer through an array of fundraising initiatives in aid of the Irish Cancer Society in Centra stores nationwide.

Every year, more than 3,400 people are diagnosed with breast cancer and funds raised will support vital cancer services and breast cancer research.

Centra has been a key supporter of the Irish Cancer Society for 14 years and kicked off this year’s partnership with a Big Pink Breakfast on Thursday, 2 October.

Charity initiatives

This October, customers will experience an array of charity initiatives taking place in their local Centra store.

  • Customers can choose to add €2 at the till, by tapping to donate to this worthy cause.
  • Centra is selling Irish Cancer Society four pack cupcakes for €3, with €1 of the proceeds going directly to the charity, perfect for a Big Pink Breakfast.
  • On Saturday 5 October, more than 150 Centra stores nationwide will be hosting a local fundraising activity such as a pink breakfast or 5km community walk. See instore for details.
  • For those who can’t make it to a Centra store, they can donate online to this worthy cause

100% of donations will go directly to supporting breast cancer patients. These funds  directly support free services like lifts to treatment, advice and guidance through the Irish Cancer Society Support Line and 13 Daffodil Centres nationwide and end-of-life night nursing in the home.

Vital funding

These vital funds also support innovative cancer research to bring us closer to a future where no-one dies from breast cancer.

To launch this year’s partnership, Centra hosted a Big Pink Breakfast in Dublin’s Pink Restaurant, where a whole host of well-known faces donned their best ‘pretty in pink’ outfits, to raise funds and awareness for the Irish Cancer Society’s breast cancer services and research.

“Each year, we are blown away by the combined efforts from our Centra retailers and their customers in the surrounding communities,” said Luke Hanlon, managing director, Centra.

Hanlon noted that the funds raised will positively impact people across Ireland affected by breast cancer.

“The funds raised play a vital role in providing free support services and care to people and families affected by breast cancer,” said Averil Power, chief executive officer, Irish Cancer Society.

Fundraising initiatives

The Irish Cancer Society typically only receives around 5% of its funding from the Government, and that is why partnerships and fundraising initiatives like this one with Centra are so important.

“Each year we are overwhelmed by the support given by Centra staff and customers which is a testament to what can be achieved when people rally together for those who really need help,” concluded Power.
