Retail group BWG has been awarded the contract to supply the tuck shops in nine Irish prisons. The multi-million euro contract means the group will supply products sold in the shops, ran by the Irish Prison Service.

The tuck shop business is a lucrative one – last year the shop in Mountjoy alone recorded revenues of €1.22m, with profits of €124,682. As part of the deal, BWG is to supply the tuck shops with Rimmel false tan along with eyeliner, eye shadow and mascara produced by the well-known brand. Prisoners will also be able to purchase Pearl Drops – Hollywood Smile, along with an array of dental products.

Those prisoners seeking to look and feel their best will also be able to buy Vaseline cocoa body gel; Dove softening silk body wash along with Wella Shockwaves Strong Wet Gel and Brylcream Wet Look Gel and Wax. And if there is a repeat of last month’s heatwave, the prisoners can buy Nivea sun cream. Inmates who enjoy cigars will be happy to see that Hamlet and Corona cigars are on the list as are all major cigarette brands.

Prisoners with a sweet tooth will not be disappointed either with the rich selection of chocolates and cakes on the list, including boxes of Cadbury’s Milk Tray. The cake selection includes Farmbake Chocolate Fudge cake, lemon cake, carrot cake, chocolate Swiss roll, strawberry Swiss roll and coconut macaroons. Chocolates include Cadbury’s Heroes and Roses along with Mars bars, Skittles, Maltesers, Crunchie and Bounty bars.

The product list also includes staples such as Tayto and Barry’s and Lyon’s tea. The most popular item on the list is the 12.5g Amber Leaf tobacco, with the prison service projecting the annual number sold across will be just under 500,000. The number of bags of cheese and onion Tayto that the prison service expects to be sold over one year totals 281,767 packets while 66,297 Mars bars will be sold over 12 months. The list also includes popular drink brands including Coke, 7up and Ballygowan, while the product list is not short on biscuits available for prisoners, including Boland’s Custard Creams, Jacob’s Jaffa Cakes and McVitie’s Rich Tea. Newspapers are also available.

The prisoner population across the prison system receive weekly gratuities from the prison service ranging from €6.65 to €15.40. They can also receive money from relatives to spend at the tuck shop.
