The Barry Group hopes to open a further two Buy Lo discount outlets in 2009 and will potentially create over 100 new jobs if expansion plans go ahead next year.

The county Cork-based wholesaler and distributor told ShelfLife the group is “currently in negotiations with potential franchisees and if all the relevant planning and permissions go to plan,” two more outlets will open before Christmas.

The Buy Lo chain has already created an initial 14 new jobs across two existing stores in Tralee, Co Kerry, and Ashbourne, Co Meath. The Tralee store was officially launched last month on 10 October, after opening in August as a pilot for the new Buy Lo discount warehouse concept. Buy Lo claims to be “the first of its kind in Ireland…offering large amounts of product at deeply discounted prices.”

According to the Barry Group, the Tralee branch has enjoyed a “hugely successful trial period and exceeded expectations for footfall and sales” since opening. The group then opened a larger 16,000 sq ft outlet in Ashbourne Retail Park in Co Meath on 22 October, which created 10 new jobs in the local area.

Speaking at its launch, Jim Barry, managing director of the Barry Group which promotes the Buy Lo franchise in Ireland, said he is “confident Buy Lo will become the number one choice for delivering quality products at affordable prices.”

The Barry group has been in business for over 50 years, currently employs over 220 staff and last year reported increased sales of more than €212 million.
