German supermarket retailer Aldi has been named Ireland’s top brand by YouGov’s BrandIndex, taking the crown over a host of leading technology, retail and consumer brands. The YouGov brand index is a measure of a brand’s “health”, calculated by taking the average of consumer-led metrics including Impression, Quality, Value, Satisfaction, Recommend and Reputation.
The index is built annually by conducting over 33,000 consumer interviews. The survey is undertaken by YouGov, a global reputations agency engaged by thousands of companies around the world to deliver insights on consumer perceptions.
The Index rankings (recreated below) show average scoring across these six categories, with Aldi being recognised as Ireland’s top brand between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019. Aldi ranks ahead of all of its retail sector rivals, but also wins out over leading lifestyle and technology brands including Google and YouTube.
Rank Brand 2019 Score
1 Aldi 45.8
2 Lidl 44.3
3 Google 42
4 Netflix 40.9
5 Tesco 37.7
6 PayPal 36.3
7 YouTube 34.6
8 Boots 34.2
9 WhatsApp 33.9
10 Dunnes Stores 31.6
Commenting on the success, Aldi Group buying director John Curtin said the announcement is another mark of success for the retailer. “This survey is particularly gratifying,” he said, “as it is based on consistent interviews with consumers right through the year.”
The YouGov survey is another marker in a strong 2019 for Aldi. This year marks the company’s 20th anniversary in Ireland, and the retailer is coming out of a summer of award wins, including 62 wins at the Great Taste Awards in London including four products achieving 3 stars – more than any other Irish retailer.
