Zambrero Ireland, the feel-good Mexican restaurant held its first-ever meal packing event at Hatch Street in Dublin on World Hunger Day which took place on Sunday, 16 October.

With the help of 100 volunteers and some well-known sporting stars, including Westmeath footballer Boidu Sayeh and Irish sprinter Sharlene Mawdsley, Zambrero packed 30,000 nutritious meals which will be donated to people in need in developing countries in Africa.

Since inception in 2005, Zambrero has committed to help stop world hunger and is on a mission to donate one billion meals by 2025 through its plate4plate programme. Every time someone purchases a burrito or bowl at any Zambrero restaurant, Zambrero sends a nutritious meal to someone in need in the developing world via its distribution partner Rise Against Hunger.

To date, Zambrero has donated 61.5 million meals globally and 1.5 million meals in Ireland. On Sunday, Zambrero doubled its meal donations for every burrito or bowl bought.

Rise Against Hunger is Zambrero’ s international distribution partner. As an international hunger relief agency, Rise Against Hunger directs Zambrero’s Plate 4 Plate meals to communities much in need globally, where many do not have access to adequate nutrition, primarily through school feeding programs.

“Our mission at Zambrero is to end world hunger one meal at a time and this year the team in Zambrero Ireland is committed to packing 30,000 meals for people who need it the most,” said Darragh Fanning, general manager of Zambrero. “I’m delighted we can support World Hunger Day and raise awareness around a very real issue in today’s society.”

Zambrero has been steadily expanding in recent years since it first launched in Canberra, Australia in 2005. Now a global franchise, the Mexican food chain has restaurants in New Zealand, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. Zambrero first opened in Ireland on Hatch Street, Dublin in 2016 and has since expanded to 13 restaurants across the country. The latest restaurant opened in Blackrock on 6 October, creating 16 additional jobs bringing total headcount across all Zambrero outlets in Ireland to nearly 200 staff.
