Aldi Ireland has agreed a new exclusive three-year deal worth almost €5 million with Limerick-based Twomey’s Bakery to supply all of Aldi’s 150 Irish stores with its breads, baked scones, tarts, and sponges.

Twomey’s Bakery, based in Dromcollogher, Co. Limerick, has been partnered with Aldi since 2019 and currently supplies Aldi’s stores with its delicious Ancient Grain Batch Loaf, Apple Tart, Fruit Scones, Apple Sponge and Apple Crumble. As part of the new deal, Twomey’s will also be introducing a tasty new rhubarb crumble, which will be available over the summer months so customers can enjoy the rhubarb while it’s at its best.

As a result of its business with Aldi the company has had the security to invest in new state-of-the-art machinery which has increased their production capacity. For example, Twomey’s has invested in new wrapping and labelling units along with a pristine top-of-the-range fridge and freezer unit.

The bakery, which was founded in 1901, has been run for four generations by the Twomey family. Now under new management, Twomey’s employ 20 full-time staff members. It now produces a range of different handmade breads and cakes using traditional family recipes that have been passed down through the generations.

Welcoming the new contract, John Curtin, Aldi Ireland group buying director said: “Twomey’s Bakery has supplied our Irish stores for almost three years now and we are delighted to further extend our partnership with a new €5 million deal. Twomey’s saw a year-on-year increase of 25% in its sales to Aldi in 2021, and we are delighted to continue supporting the local company’s growth into the future. At Aldi, we are committed to supporting our Irish producers so that our customers can enjoy the very best products Ireland has to offer.”

Patrick Twomey, managing director with Twomey’s Bakery, added: “Like all producers, we have faced difficulties in our supply chain in recent months, with increases in the cost of ingredient prices, along with transport and energy costs proving a real challenge. This new contract is a big boost for our business, providing a huge degree of certainty and security. We are grateful for Aldi’s continued support and partnership.”

Aldi is committed to growing its Irish supply base and increasing the number of Irish products available in its stores.  Currently working with over 330 Irish food and drink producers, Aldi spent €1 billion with its Irish suppliers in 2021. It has invested more than €5.5 million in its Grow with Aldi supplier development programme since 2018, which offers up-and-coming artisan Irish food and drink producers the chance to have their products listed in Aldi’s 150 stores.
