BWG employees become first to sign up to new commercial driving apprenticeship

BWG colleagues Megan Rispin and Teresa Dunne, transport planners within the transport office of BWG’s National Distribution Centre (NDC), have become the first to sign up to the new Transport Operations and Commercial Driving apprenticeship.

The pair will be part of the first cohort of students in Ireland who will complete the national framework of qualifications linked with the profession of Heavy Goods Vehicle Driving.

Recently launched by Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris, and Minister of State at the Department of Transport with special responsibility for International and Road Transport and Logistics, Hildegarde Naughton, the new two-year programme will provide the opportunity for employees to “earn as they learn” to gain a Higher Education qualification as well as their professional driving qualification.

“We are delighted to support both Megan and Teresa to participate in further education in what is a first-of-its-kind programme,” said Peter Donohoe, chief people officer, BWG Group.

“Currently the average age of commercial vehicle drivers is over 50 with only 2% of those holding a commercial vehicle license being women. Therefore, we hope the launch of this new apprenticeship will attract a new generation of women HGV drivers and BWG Group is very proud to see two of our female colleagues be the first to take this opportunity.”
