Stores close due to Storm Barra safety risk

Retailers in the south of the country in particular have been closed today as storm Barra rages across the country. A Status Red wind warning for Cork and Kerry in place from 6am today and a similar warning for Clare in place from 4pm, was behind the closures.

Many shops, schools, universities and vaccine centres across the country have been closed after Met Eireann warned that the storm posed a threat to life.

A spokesperson for Tesco said: “Due to the latest Storm Barra red alert warning, all of our Cork and Kerry stores will be closed on December 7th and will re-open when safe to do so. Home delivery and collection services will also be curtailed as a result.”

An Aldi spokesperson said: “Due to the Status Red weather warning, our stores in Cork and Kerry will be closed throughout Tuesday, while our stores in Clare will be closed from 3pm on Tuesday and reopen at 9am Wednesday.”

“We are monitoring the weather situation closely and if there are any changes we will communicate this.The health and safety of all our customers and store teams is our priority.”

A spokesperson for Lidl said: “Due to #StormBarra weather warnings, we will be closing Lidl stores in Cork and Kerry on Tuesday, 7th December. The safety of our customers and store teams remains our top priority, and we’ll continue to assess the situation as it happens and will post any updates as we have them!”

Severe gusts

The country has seen wind speeds of over 80km/h, with severe or damaging gusts in excess of 130km/h and there is also reports of snow in parts and flooding in coastal areas.

Met Eireann has said that the weather warnings will be in place until 9pm tonight, when these counties will enter a Status Orange wind warning, which will remain in place until 6am Wednesday morning.

Status Orange wind warnings have also been in place for Limerick, Waterford, Galway, Mayo, Wexford, Dublin, Louth, Wicklow and east Meath.
