Centra has raised €150,000 in support of the Irish Cancer Society’s Breast Cancer Awareness programme.

Having proudly supported the Irish Cancer Society for 12 years, the funds raised this year are an accumulation of donations in aid of the ‘Care for your Pair’ movement. This year fundraising initiatives from Centra stores included a tap at till mechanic instore which raised €114,000, as well as the sale of merchandise and a Just Giving page which raised €38,000 collectively.

These much-needed funds will go directly to supporting breast cancer patients by providing crucial services such as the Irish Cancer Society Freephone Support Line, the Volunteer Driver Service, the Night Nursing Service, and the free Counselling Service.

“It’s brilliant to see such a fantastic result of the combined efforts from our Centra stores the length and breadth of the country,” said Ian Allen, managing director of Centra. “We are so proud to support the Irish Cancer Society over the past 12 years and this year more than ever, our Centra retailers passionately undertook a variety of fundraising efforts for this worthy cause. The funds raised will positively impact so many people effected by breast cancer through the vital services that the Irish Cancer Society provide, and we are extremely proud to support this charity.”

Last year, donations to the Irish Cancer Society from Centra contributed towards the funding of more than 2,400 trips to chemotherapy for breast cancer patients, more than 2,700 counselling sessions for breast cancer patients, almost 700 nights of end-of-life care for breast cancer patients and supported more than 3,400 people affected by breast cancer through the Support Line and Daffodil Centres.

Irish Cancer Society’s National Fundraising lead, Rosemary Simmons said: “The Irish Cancer Society is delighted to mark the twelfth year of our partnership with Centra. We are always amazed to witness the support and enthusiasm that is shown for breast cancer awareness in Centra stores across the country. The funds raised this year will play a vital role in providing free support services and care to people affected by breast cancer while also helping to develop ground-breaking breast cancer research.

“When it comes to breast cancer early detection can save lives and we encourage anyone who has a concern to contact a GP. Our Support Line is also available on 1800 200 700 where our expert cancer nurses are available to chat about any issue big or small when it comes to breast health and breast cancer.”
