Maxol has continued one of rugby’s longest commercial sponsorships with its backing of the Irish Universities Rugby Union (IURU).  The Maxol IURU Rugby Festival is the largest third level rugby event in Ireland, and took place this year on Saturday, 20 October at University College Cork (UCC).

In the final, Trinity College Dublin beat UCD to take home the Conroy Cup, which was inaugurated in 1988, and named in honour of father and son “Judge” Conroy and Paddy Conroy, both past presidents of UCD RFC.  The Conroy Cup is the men’s under 20s intervarsity rugby tournament and is considered by many to be one of the best non-professional rugby tournaments in the country. Six sides competed including the 2017/18 title holders Dublin University, who were seeking their fifth successive victory; Maynooth University; National University of Ireland, Galway; Queen’s University, Belfast; University College Dublin and hosts, University College Cork.

Siobhan Grimes, head of retail for The Maxol Group, said the brand strives to play an active role in supporting local communities; sponsoring events like the IURU contest allows it to do just that. “We have developed a special relationship with the Irish Universities Rugby Union and its members,” she said, “and are proud to be continuing our support of the growth of local sporting stars and the future success of Irish rugby.

“It was really rewarding to watch the players perform to such a high level on the pitch at UCC,” Grimes added.

The IURU was established in 1904 and currently consists of members University College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin, NUI Galway, University College Cork, Queens University, NUI Maynooth, and University of Coleraine. The Maxol IURU Rugby Festival continues on Friday, 16 November with the Dudley Cup at Queens University, Belfast.
