Vision Express to acquire Tesco Opticians, including three Irish branches

Subject to regulatory approval, Vision Express will close the acquisition of Tesco Opticians this year

Optical retailer Vision Express is set to acquire Tesco Opticians’ network of 209 stores across the UK and Ireland.

The sale will include three stores in Ireland in Balbriggan, Naas and Portlaoise, The Irish Times reports. Currently, Tesco employs 10 staff across these three outlets.

Subject to receiving the green light from the UK Competition and Markets Authority, the deal is expected to complete later this year in a move which will see Vision Express’ total number of stores expand to 598.

Tesco Opticians employs over 1,500 people and had revenues of approximately 90 million GBP in 2016. Vision Express has said its intends to retain Tesco Optician personnel in all stores.

“We extend a very warm welcome to all Tesco Optician colleagues and customers,” said Vision Express CEO Jonathan Lawson, adding that, “together [we]  will ensure we continue to provide them with eye health expertise that is second to none”.

Vision Express is owned by GrandVision, the third largest optical retailer in the UK. The parent company operates in more than 40 countries with over 31,000 employees, 110 of whom are based in Ireland.
