A report by insights agency MediaCom has revealed that he average Irish consumer will spend €493 on Christmas gifts this year.

The report, published today and surveying 1,000 adults across Ireland, reveals that 53% of shoppers begin their Christmas gift shopping at least 2-3 months before Christmas, and that women begin their shopping earlier than men.

In addition to the €493 gift budget, the average adult will spend €215 on food and drink during the holiday.

The survey also found that Irish consumers have very much embraced the “Black Friday” phenomenon – whereby retailers apply major discounts to promote a day of vastly increased sales and bargain hunting. 60% said that Black Friday made it easier to afford gifts they had on their purchases list, while 39% said they would not have purchased an item were it not reduced in a Black Friday offer.

In relation to this, more than one-third of Christmas shopping is now done online.

Retailers and brands have quickly become sophisticated in how they employ their Black Friday game plans,” said Ian McGrath, managing director of MediaCom. “Many choose to expand volume by expanding their offerings beyond the day itself.

“It is likely to be a critical part of this year’s pre-Christmas plans for Irish retailers,” he added, “as sterling softens and more sales shift online from the high street.”
