Women in Ireland paid 14% less than men, Conference hears
A major feminist event in Dublin convened over the weekend to discuss a wide range of issues affecting women in Ireland in 2016

#Fempower, one of Ireland’s largest feminist events took place in Dublin on Saturday 16th, with a view to bringing women of all ages and backgrounds together to tackle issues affecting all women in Ireland today. Subtitled Feminist Conference and Activist Fair, the event focused on (among other things) equality in the workplace, education, health services and public life. Senator Katherine Zappone told delegates that only 16% of recipients of a Full Contributory Pension are women, only 10% of board members in Ireland are women, and that the gender pay gap has in fact widened in recent years.
“There is serious need for our political leaders to champion equal opportunities for women in the workplace, education, health services and public life,” Senator Zappone said. “Family services such as affordable and accessible childcare are vital for women to progress in society.
“The National Women’s Council’s success with their pre-election manifesto shows there is real commitment to women’s equality in Ireland,” Senator Zappone added, “but there is a need to translate that in to changes in public policy.”
At the event, at Dublin’s Tallaght Stadium, some of Ireland’s most prominent feminist speaks shared their views and personal experiences on topics ranging from education, leadership and childcare to body image, consent and the eighth amendment.
Meanwhile, 109 general election candidates have so far signed up to the National Women’s Council of Ireland’s manifesto, which sets out a number of steps towards equality in all of the aforementioned areas. To learn more, visit www.nwci.ie.
