Wednesday, 23 December is set to be the busiest in-store shopping day this Christmas for Irish retailers, according to Visa Europe.

Basing its prediction on an analysis of both up-to-the-minute spending data and Christmas sales trends from previous years, the payments giant forecasts consumers are set to spend €150 million on Wednesday with Visa cards including debit, credit and prepaid – a 10% increase on last year’s figures. Encouraging news, considering €1 in every €3 of Irish consumer spending is now made on a Visa card.

With more than 2.6 million in-store transactions on the day, Irish Visa cardholders will snap up the last of their Christmas shopping in Irish retail stores, with spending expected to spike on the day between 1 – 2pm with 250,000 transactions taking place with retailers over the hour.

The spike of spending in shops in the run-up to Christmas begins on Saturday 19 December, a traditional peak retail date as it is the last Saturday before Christmas.  €118 million is predicted to be spent on the day with Visa cards, as approximately 2.1 million transactions are made over the 24 hour period.
