Who, What, Why: Is the craft beer craze going to cause a hops shortage?

BBC News reports that craft beer has come from nowhere to claim 8% of the US beer market. Far more hops go into craft beer than the equivalent produced by large corporate brewers – roughly six times more. This could potentially create a shortage in the US and even in the UK, things will be difficult if last year’s weather problems are repeated. The 2014 crop is already "pretty much sold out", according to one insider.

The five-a-day disaster: why the numbers don’t add up

The Guardian examines how the numbers surrounding the ‘five-a-day’ fruit and veg message don’t add up. The National Diet and Nutrition Survey shows that 70% of UK adults eat fewer than five portions of fruit and veg a day, let alone the seven recommended last month by researchers at University College London. The data, collected by NatCen Social Research, shows a slight drop in fruit and vegetable intake in all age groups apart from the over-65s between 2008 and 2012.

Funeral held for shop manager stabbed to death in Kilkenny

The Irish Times reports on the funeral of 26-year-old Mairéad Moran, who was tragically stabbed to death in her workplace last week. The assistant manager at the Holland and Barrett health shop in Kilkenny city’s Market Cross shopping centre was fatally stabbed last Thursday night.
