It has emerged that Tesco Ireland is bringing over some 350 temporary staff from UK to manage extra work during the busy Christmas period.

According to industry sources, the retailer has taken this action due to Mandate’s preclusion of short-term contracts for Irish employees.

The trade union says that extra work should be fulfilled by giving extra hours to Tesco’s existing employees in Ireland. When contacted, a spokesperson for Mandate said that it had only just received news the development, that it was not clear exactly how many workers were coming to Ireland, and that it is writing to Tesco about the issue.

Mandate also claims it has information suggesting that the 350 are not temporary shop workers but are coming to roll out new planograms across the retailer’s Irish store network. Tesco has made no response
to the claim.
