Liquor display code to be strengthened and extended
According to reports, the Minister for Justice aims to extend the voluntary code for the sale and display of liquor to standalone off-licences

Following a review of the operation of the voluntary code practice for the sale and display of alcohol by mixed traders, it has been reported that Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Dermot Ahern wants to strengthen the code and extend it to specialist off-licences. The review found compliance currently to be at 90% on average, including newly signed up multiple, Dunnes Stores.
Under the code, retailers carrying an off-licence are subject to inspection to see if they are implementing the actions of the code correctly, and as it stands, this inspections follows 12 items, four of which can lead to an instant fail. According to reports from the trade, proposed more stringent controls would make all 12 items equally strict, that failing to pass a single one could lead to failure of the inspection.
In addition, it has been proposed that signing up to the code should be a compulsory part of all applications to obtain or renew a licence. Furthermore, it was reported that the Minister wants to extend the code to the independent off-trade, which would prevent off-licences from creating displays of alcohol, among other restrictions of the code.
