Last month the Barry Group announced a 4% sales increase in the year to 31 January, totalling €212.5 million, while overall group profit before tax rose to €2.67 million.

Commenting on the results, managing director Jim Barry said that he was “delighted” the group had increased sales and pre-tax profit once again this year. He said the progress had been achieved “through the continuing execution of our retail strategy which focuses on growth and customer experience, as well as our ability to offer grocery product at competitive prices to our customers.”

Speaking to more than 200 delegates at the annual Costcutter conference at Dunboyne Castle, Co Meath, Barry commended the group’s performance, “in what has been a very difficult trading environment,” and said that he remains “very confident that the Costcutter symbol group is well positioned to successfully navigate through these challenging times.”

At a Gala dinner that evening, the awards for outstanding achievements in retailing across the group were revealed. Costcutter Ballybofey, Co Donegal, was named Supermarket Store of the Year, while Costcutter Grenagh, Co Cork, was awarded Foodmarket Store of the Year, and Costcutter Mayfield, Cork, was named Express Store of the Year.

In addition, Costcutter Carndonagh, Co Donegal, took the award for Costcutter Off-Licence of the Year.
