Latest TNS Wordlpanel figures for the UK grocery market show that for the 12 weeks to 14 June the rate of growth of discounters Aldi and Lidi was surpassed by middle ground retailers Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Waitrose. Tesco posted the highest growth so far this year, at 6.2%, growing almost as strongly as the entire grocery market (6.5%).

The analysts said that the figures showed UK consumers have started to revert to pre-recession behaviour. In particular, the fact that the growth of Lidl and Aldi has tailed off while mainstream supermarkets are performing more strongly indicates that shoppers have adopted a more measured approach to the recession.

In Ireland however, the discounters continue to grow at 15.8%, according to TNS Worldpanel Ireland, for the period to 14 June. The figure is based on defined grocery and excludes non-gorcery items such as clothes.
