Filan’s Centra of Castle Street, Sligo has been named National Convenience Store of the Year 2017, beating off stiff competition to scoop the ultimate accolade at the ShelfLife National C-Store Awards 2017.

Ireland’s top retailers and brands gathered at Dublin’s Royal Marine Hotel on the night of Wednesday, 22nd to attend the prestigious ceremony. Now in its 17th year, the C-Store Awards are the only comprehensive and independently judged business accolades for the convenience store sector. Once again, the event’s platinum sponsors were Cuisine de France, Irish Daily Mail and the National Lottery.

Together with returning master of ceremonies Marty Whelan, ShelfLife welcomed more than 400 guests from across the industry. A total of 29 awards were presented, celebrating the industry’s finest stores and people in a diverse range of categories.

These included a special presentation of the Convenience Champion of the Year 2017, which was awarded to Gus O’Hara. A former past President of the Convenience Stores and Newsagents Association (CSNA), Gus O’Hara currently serves as Executive Officer 2017/2018. A veteran Dublin retailer, he has been active for many years in representing the needs of his fellow retailers and supporting local community initiatives.

ShelfLife publisher John McDonald speaks to the assembled members of the retail industry“There are a number of very important highlights from this year’s awards scheme,” ShelfLife publisher John McDonald said on the night. “Standards have improved across the board, and there was a discernible percentage increase in the average score of all stores that entered.

“This year the competition to sit at the top table was fierce,” he continued. “Standards are up across the board and the ultimate winner is the shopper who gets an increasingly strong and sophisticated retail experience at his local convenience store.”
