Using its annual conference as a platform, the Gala retail group has announced its new health and wellness strategy it says will deliver more choice for its shoppers. The Group pledged an investment of €300,000 in Your Choice with Gala, which will include both in-store activation through an initiative with Unislim Ireland, and a major sponsorship with Parkrun Ireland.

Speaking at the conference, taking place today at the Malton Hotel in Killarney, CEO of Gala Retail Gary Desmond said the company’s aim is to offer more choice to customers. “That’s why we’re investing significantly in our new strategy,” Desmond said, “to ensure it really delivers for our shoppers, both in-store and their everyday lives.”

According to Desmond, research shows that 1 in 10 adults in Ireland are estimated to be on a slimming plan, with 1 in 2 trying to lose weight. “Therefore,” he said, “our new product development with Unislim will deliver meal options that are convenient, healthy and don’t compromise on taste for our busy shoppers.”

The Gala Healthy Choices range with Unislim will launch in the new year, when more than 100,000 Unislim members will be among the first to try out the new range.

In addition to this, Gala also is set to become the first commercial sponsor of Parkrun, the free, weekly 5km runs that now operate in almost 40 locations nationwide. Once again, Gala’s new mantra of “your choice with Gala” is the centre of this partnership, as parkrunners can choose to walk, run or jog at the weekly parkruns; even better, there is no age limit on participation.

“We’re not here to tell shoppers how to live their lives,” Desmond added, “instead it’s all about helping to deliver choice and promote healthier lifestyles.”
