Following a request to wear a face covering, a woman has been charged with the violent assault of a Sligo retail worker.

The incident occurred at approximately 6.45pm on Saturday evening when the woman, aged in her early 20s, entered a store in Sligo town without wearing a face covering.

When advised by a staff member that it was necessary to wear a face covering under Covid-19 legislation, the woman left the shop but later returned after a short time and allegedly assaulted the staff member with a weapon.

Afterwards, gardaí said the woman fled on foot. The staff member was treated for non-life threating injuries at Sligo University Hospital.

The alleged attacker later entered Sligo Garda Station where she was arrested and later detained at Ballymote Garda station. She is subsequently due to appear before Sligo District Court on Thursday.
