Willie O’Byrne, former managing director of the Mace symbol group, has taken over as managing director of BWG Foods from 1 December. In his new role, O’Byrne has responsibility for all BWG Foods’ retail and wholesale activities in Ireland, overseeing the management of the Spar, Eurospar, Mace, Value Centre, XL and BWG Foodservice brands. Peter Kealy, formerly BWG Retail managing director and who has been with the company for over 26 years, will remain involved with BWG on an advisory and consultancy basis.

O’Byrne joined the BWG group in mid-2008 following its acquisition of Mangans Wholesale, which had held the Mace franchise in the west of Ireland. He came to the role after seven years as O2’s head of wholesale. He had also worked for BWG prior to this, as Cash and Carry director with the group in the mid-1990s.
