The worst kept secret for the past month was the u-turn that the government was undertaking in regard to its commitment to retailers in this matter, given by both Fine Gael and Labour in advance of the election this year.

Buried within the Estimates speech by the Minister for Justice Equality and Defence, Alan Shatter, TD acknowledged the real reason for the u-turn. He said: “The government was advised that any model proposed would require the payment of ”. 

He went on to say: “I hope that the decision will remove the undertaking for those contemplating investment in the commercial property market and bring about renewed activity in the sector”.  So it’s official – the landlords have re-established their position in our national pecking order!
