In the absence of government action, Irish retailers can only hope that the external environment somehow improves. It is predicted that the next UK government will have to hike taxes by a significant measure (including VAT, possibly to 20%) to plug the massive whole in the ailing economy, which will go some way to levelling the playing field. By mid-2010 it is likely that UK prices, particularly alcohol prices, will be much closer to those in Ireland
