The world’s largest food saving app, Too Good To Go, has hit a landmark milestone in Ireland with 250,000 Surprise Bags of would-be wasted food saved to date.

With food prices in Ireland estimated to have risen by 11.7%* in 2022, appetite for initiatives such as Too Good To Go has grown over the last year, as consumers look to find cheaper alternatives to their regular food shops and businesses look to operate more efficiently. With its demand increasing, globally Too Good To Go has reported that it is now saving three meals every second.

“The issue of rising food prices has certainly increased visibility of the problem of food waste,” said Sophie Trueman, managing director for Too Good To Go in the UK and Ireland.

“It’s fantastic to have reached this milestone in Ireland and to see our amazing community of partners and users growing,” she added. “There are so many benefits to preventing food from going to waste – businesses can recover the sunk cost of would-be wasted food, consumers can get good food for less, and with one simple action, we’re collectively doing something great for the planet by stopping that food from ending up in landfill.”

For every Surprise Bag rescued through Too Good To Go, the app has calculated that this saves the equivalent C02 emissions that it takes to power a smartphone 442 times. By saving a quarter of a million Surprise Bags, 250 tonnes of food has been prevented from ending up in landfill and  625 tonnes of C02 emissions saved from going to waste – the equivalent emissions of 73 Irish citizens or 123 flights around the world.

Launched to Ireland in September 2021, Too Good To Go is now present nationally with partners in every major city and beyond. The app has already been downloaded over 250,000 times in Ireland alone and has welcomed more than 1,000 food businesses onto the platform, including national chains like Spar, Fresh and Centra alongside thousands more local favourites from KC Peaches or Rolling Donut in Dublin, to The Happy Pear in Wicklow.
