The Nearby store on Cashel’s Main Street, Tipperary, was the scene of an attempted break in on Wednesday, 27 August, which left the glass doors badly smashed.

Tipperary councillor Declan Burgess condemned the damage, saying that San, the shop owner, and his staff put a lot of effort into getting the new convenience store open.

“I am really upset to hear that there was criminal damage tonight in an attempt to break into the new convenience store, Nearby on Main Street, Cashel,” Cllr Burgess said.

“San and his staff have been putting in huge effort to get the shop open, it isn’t open a week and now it’s awful to see their hard work disrespected in this way.

“These thugs need to be held accountable”.

Cashel’s “good” people

In response on social media, the shop’s owners said that they had been welcomed to Cashel by many good people, and would not be deterred by the attempted break in.

“We have neighbouring business and good lovely people welcoming us to Cashel with open arms,” they said.

Cashel is good – and good always wins.

“We choose to do what we are good at across all our other 11 stores morning to night – that is to serve the community,” they added.

Calling for more garda resources on the streets of Cashel, the Fine Gael councillor said that people need to be able to feel safe in their own communities.

“Over the past few weeks, we’ve all noticed a rise in anti-social behaviour around the town.

“It’s something that can’t be ignored.

“Cashel is a proud community and we all want to feel safe walking our streets,” Cllr Burgess said.

“Our gardaí need the resources and support to deal with this properly.

“This type of behaviour should not be tolerated in our town,” he added.

The Fine Gael councillor said he would continue to make representations to key stakeholders in order to secure more of a garda presence for the town.
