SuperValu has announced a €250,000 fodder fund to assist Irish farmers during the current fodder crisis. The retailer has partnered with Kepak and Oliver Carty Ltd to establish the fund which will be administered by the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA). SuperValu also says it will transport imported fodder to affected farmers all over the country if needed.

The harsh winter and recent severe weather conditions has meant that farmers have had to purchase greater quantities of fodder than normal in the opening few months of 2013. This increased demand has placed farmers all over Ireland under financial pressure to meet the needs of their cattle and livestock.

Martin Kelleher, managing director, SuperValu, said, "As the number one supporter of Irish food producers and the farming industry, we are keenly aware of the difficulties currently facing Irish farmers all over the country. Our business is heavily reliant upon the Irish agri-food sector and we recognise we have a responsibility to our suppliers and the farming community as a whole. We along with our partners, Kepak and Oliver Carty Ltd. are committed to protecting Irish farming and Irish farm families, through this current crisis."

Pat Smith, general secretary, IFA said; "I would like to welcome this initiative from SuperValu on behalf of the IFA and thank them, Kepak and Oliver Carty Limited for their support in this time of crisis. SuperValu are one of the farming sectors biggest customers and it is great to see them offer this level of support to our industry."
