Price increases never due to the retailer, notes CSNA
Dáil debates Labour’s “unfair prices” Bill amid ongoing retailer pushback against profit scrutiny and price gouging accusations

Dáil debates motions on supermarket profit, Government gives indication it will “not oppose” Labour Party Bill that uses the words “unfair prices” in its title according to the CSNA.
Retailers must by now be sick and tired of the constant and totally unfounded allegations from various public and media sources that we engage in price gouging, have excessive profits and generally act in a predatory manner towards our customers, the group noted.
Despite there having been two very comprehensive reports, in March 2022 (fuel prices) and June (2023) by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC), there are still some people willing to throw muck at the retail industry, and cannot accept that the reason for price increases is never due to the retailer, they are only reacting to their suppliers, their wholesalers, their distributors and the manufacturers of the goods the customer buys in our stores, it added.
The ignorance of some commentators in these matters is astonishing – they cannot see that in a global economy, events thousands of miles away can and will have effects of the entire supply chain.
We have nothing to apologise for – price increases are not good for our businesses either.
We will resist any attempt by Government or opposition to seek to apply any additional administrative burden by way insisting all of us engaged in the sale of groceries should have accounts audited and available for forensic examination by either CCPC or any other quango.
