Statutory Code for drinks sales imminent?

The structural separation of alcohol from other goods in convenience stores and supermarkets seems on the cards with the Government planning a Statutory Code requiring structural separation as per Section 9 of the 2008 Intoxicating Liquor Act.

The move forms part of a long-delayed package of measures which the Government hopes will tackle alcohol misuse and it’s hoped that Cabinet approval will be sought before the Summer recess.

However alcohol sponsorship remains a stumbling block for the Government with disagreement at Cabinet level over whether or not to ban alcohol sponsorship.

A new statutory Code is likely to replace the present voluntary Code agreed between the Government and the drinks industry and it will also provide grounds on which objections to a trader’s licence could be lodged at licence renewal time.
