Spar KCR has officially opened following a major development of the Dublin convenience store, introducing a range of new retail technologies and sustainability initiatives.
The new flagship store includes Ireland’s first avocado scanner, Deligo AI self-checkout technology, digital deli ordering kiosks and a walk-in chilled drinks area branded the ‘Kimmage Chill Room’.
The avocado scanner allows customers to check the ripeness of individual avocados before purchasing, with the technology designed to help shoppers select fruit according to when they intend to eat it and potentially reduce food waste.
Meanwhile, the Deligo AI self-checkout system uses machine vision to identify multiple items in a customer’s basket simultaneously, removing the need to scan individual barcodes.
Fresh food orders can be placed through Ordú Digital Deli Ordering Kiosks, allowing customers to order food before continuing with their shopping and return to collect their order.
The new ‘Kimmage Chill Room’ provides a walk-in area for chilled alcoholic and alcohol-free beverages. An air door at the beer cave is designed to reduce cold-air loss and improve energy efficiency.
Spar said the refrigeration system used throughout the store delivers almost 65% energy savings.
The store also incorporates a number of sustainability features, including an external living wall designed to support biodiversity, air quality and insulation.
A wind turbine contributes to the store’s power requirements, while rainwater harvesting is used to irrigate external planting. Customers can also recycle used takeaway cups through the cup collective.
The store offers a range of food and drink options, including Brevato Coffee, Subway, Greens and Co salad bar and a Spar deli.
Speaking at the official opening, Spar sales director – Colin Donnelly said the new store builds on the retailer’s history of introducing new developments to the Irish convenience market.
“For over 63 years, Spar has been at the forefront of convenience shopping in Ireland, launching many firsts in the market,” Donnelly said.
He added: “Spar KCR is a fantastic showcase for the future of retail designed to deliver a faster, more convenient shopping experience, championing sustainability and innovative technology.”
