Magazines Ireland, the professional association for the magazine industry, has named ShelfLife editor Fionnuala Carolan as Business Editor of the Year. The magazine’s website ShelfLife.ie also won the Business Website of the Year Award, presented at a ceremony in Dublin’s Four Seasons Hotel last night.

"The Magazines Ireland Awards are the ‘Oscars’ of the business in Ireland," said John McDonald, publisher of ShelfLife. "We’re thrilled that Fionnuala’s hard work and dedication has been recognised by her peers in the business. Her analysis, insight and timely coverage of the retail sector are the driving force of the magazine."

ShelfLife.ie, the magazine’s website, has expanded its offerings with outbound e-mail services including The Week in Grocery, a concise roundup of media reporting in the sector. "Fionnuala’s assistant editor Gillian Hamill has been largely responsible for our online activity, which has now been recognised by this award," added McDonald. "Quality journalism is the foundation that underpins any media organisation.  Fionnuala’s and Gillian’s professionalism in steering the magazine through a changing media landscape are the qualities which earned these coveted business awards."

ShelfLife Magazine has been in existence for 15 years but the website is a relatively new addition to the brand, launching just two years ago. The entire magazine is featured online and it is an excellent source of information on the grocery retail trade in Ireland.

Editor, Fionnuala Carolan, has being in the chair just shy of the year but previously held the positions of staff journalist, assistant editor and deputy editor with the title. Before taking on the post as editor she spent two years in Hong Kong where she worked as a commissioning editor for the South China Morning Post. The judges of the awards said the editorial developments she has made have been very successful and noted that the magazine had been redesigned to reflect her vision. They also said she showed a commitment to excellence with a wide range and depth of articles.
