Chip & Pin on credit and debit cards are there for a valid reason – they help prevent fraudulent use of a stolen or skimmed card.

Retailers who attempt to by-pass the protection are leaving themselves open to being charged for the entire value of goods or services provided if they override the security system that is in place to protect the cardholder and merchant.

We have knowledge of a scam perpetrated upon a retailer in north Leinster recently.  A number of UKASH and Payzone money vouchers were purchased up to their maximum of €500. The retailer’s staff accepted the assurances of the conmen that the faulty credit card would go through for payment if the manual override was used to process – guess what, seven purchases over the weekend of €3,500 on a skimmed credit card – retailer loses – conmen laugh all the way to their bank!

NEVER OVERRIDE THE PIN SECURITY (and question yourself whether you should accept credit cards for low margin transactions.)
