Consumers are constantly searching for exciting new answers to that age-old question: ‘What will I have for dinner tonight?’ After a gruelling day at work, few can face the prospect of slaving over the stove for hours, which means sauces that can add flavour to a dish in a dash are a sure-fire hit

Reflecting Irish trends, 94% of UK households buy cooking sauces in a year (Source: Kantar Worldpanel 52 w/e to 17.03.13). Sauces are an ideal way to add flavour and spice to a huge range of meals without having to slave over the stove; delivering on both convenience and health as consumers can still add all their favourite veggies to meals. Inspired by their travels abroad, Irish consumers have become more experimental in their tastes and want to try new flavour combinations and authentic ethnic sauces. Meal occasions where only one person is present also offer a strong opportunity for the category as cooking sauces under-index at this occasion.
Stirring things up!
Premier Foods is set to revolutionise the stir fry category with the launch of Sharwood’s Stir Fry Melts which will be available in four flavours; Chow Mein, Sweet & Sour, Sweet Chilli and Spicy Szechuan.
The new product will offer consumers all they need to enjoy a great tasting stir fry by concentrating all the flavour of a sauce into a little pot, for a light and flavoursome coating. In fact, adding flavour to stir fry dishes couldn’t be simpler. The launch will be supported by a £1.4m TV advertising campaign as well as PR activity to drive trial and awareness.
The brand believes Sharwood’s Stir Fry Melts are all consumers need to add excitement and flavour to their stir fry without the hassle of having to add any further seasonings or sauces. The melts contain all of the flavour of a jar of sauce however this new concentrated format truly does mean that less is more, leaving dishes with a flavour-packed coating.
Pots of flavour
Each Oxo Stock Pot contains a rich flavour base, made from a special blend of real meat juices, vegetables, herbs and seasoning. Available in eight-packs, Oxo Stock Pots are gluten free, contain no artificial flavours or colours and are available in Reduced Salt.
Oxo Stock Pots were created as a result of gaining the following insight from dry stock shoppers: “I love creating tasty, flavoursome meals that everyone enjoys. Using stock cubes is a big part of this but the flavours are pretty standard and there are times when I would like my meals to have a bit more oompf.”
Oxo Stock Pots offer an ideal solution to this dilemma. Effectively, they’re little portions of Oxo’s best ever concentrated stock that add depth and richness to consumers’ meals, lifting the flavour of every mouthful.

Delivering choice and personality
Since the 1980s, Dolmio has been innovating in the market with its range of sauces and meal kits, regularly developing new and exciting product ranges that suit all tastes. This summer Dolmio is launching its new Bolognese and Lasagne jar range which aims to appeal to an even more broad range of consumers with five new flavours of Bolognese sauce, each with its own specific benefits and characteristics.
- Original: The classic Bolognese sauce known and loved by consumers for as long as they can remember. Suitable for everyone in the family, a consumer will see this as the right choice for any occasion.
- Low Fat: With less fat than the other jars in the range, this sauce option has appeal for consumers who are calorie conscious and always have one eye on their health and wellbeing.
- Chunky: This sauce adds even more texture and flavour to a Bolognese with bigger chunks and is suited to more special occasions or ‘adult’ mealtimes.
- Smooth: At the opposite end of the spectrum, smooth sauce is for family mealtimes with picky eaters. “No bits” means parents can be sure the kids won’t turn their nose up at it.
- Intense: Like the Chunky sauce, Intense Bolognese sauce has the added flavour of sun-dried tomatoes that make it perfect for adult mealtimes.
Also part of the new range launching this summer is an improved range of Dolmio’s Lasagne jars. Offering convenience doubled with ease of preparation, Dolmio’s Lasagne Sauce features Original and Low Fat options as well as Chunky Tomato for the more grown-up occasions.
A major trend in food currently is the notion for consumers that a product will be “the right range for me”, and Dolmio’s new five sauces range offers this choice and personality. Meanwhile, for retailers looking for shallower ranges, Dolmio’s new range is ideal and makes shopping easier with its wall of jars easy to recognise.
Kikk-start your tastebuds!
Kikkoman is an ideal seasoning for all kinds of foods, not just Asian cuisine. The brand’s naturally brewed soy sauce is a universal seasoning that enhances the flavour of many different dishes and ingredients, including fish and meat, salad and vegetables, starters, mains and desserts.
Kikkoman Naturally Brewed Soy Sauce is Ireland’s number one naturally brewed soy sauce. It is produced exclusively from four pure ingredients: soy beans, wheat, water and salt. Kikkoman soy sauce is brewed naturally in a process which takes around six months.
Kikkoman has developed a naturally brewed Tamari gluten-free soy sauce. This is made out of soy beans, water, salt and alcohol – but doesn’t contain any wheat, supplementary flavour enhancers or colour additives.
Kikkoman’s Stir Fry Sauce is sweet and flavourful and makes the perfect seasoning for foods that are cooked quickly in the wok. For a fast and simple wok-cooked meal, simply cut a few seasonal vegetables such as peppers, carrots, mushrooms, courgettes or cabbage into bite-sized pieces and sauté them briefly in the wok. Splash on some Stir-fry sauce and this will create a flavoursome vegetarian meal.
