Independent retailers’ group RGDATA has urged the government to ensure that essential retail and food logistics workers get vaccinated against Covid-19 with essential frontline workers in Phase 2 of the vaccine roll out programme.

“RGDATA is aware of the extreme challenges facing the owners of essential shops and supermarkets throughout the country as they try to manage staff and customer safety amidst the worrying trends in this third wave of Covid-19,” said RGDATA director general Tara Buckley. “Shop owners are working hard to manage rostering and ensure that staff and customers adhere to all the best guidance with regard to operating and shopping safely during these extremely challenging times.”

The independent shops that RGDATA represents are essential in communities throughout the country and they must be given every support to allow them to remain open and trading in the best interest of all,” Buckley added. “We are urging the government to include essential retail and food logistics workers in the earliest possible phase of the vaccine rollout – they should be included with the most essential frontline workers because that is what they are.”

RGDATA has written to Tanaiste and Minister for Enterprise Trade & Employment Leo Varadkar to request vaccinations for frontline retail workers.
