Retail Excellence Ireland (REI) has launched its own digital division: e-Tail Excellence Ireland (EEI). According to REI, EEI will create a membership and platform for retailers, multichannel and pure-play operators and the wider digital community in Ireland to take advantage of the surge of consumers using multichannels to research and shop online.

Online Irish consumer spend is predicted to rise to €5.7bn by 2016, and the European online market will soon cap €400bn. EEI says it’s essential to bring that spend into the Irish economy by bringing about fundamental changes in the way business is done online, and elevate Ireland’s digital position and strength both in Ireland and globally.

The division of REI will be overseen by Sheila Buckley, while the EEI committee is chaired by Geoff Scully, commercial director, Littlewoods Ireland. The EEI committee has been formed with Littlewoods Ireland, Mothercare, O2 Telefónica, Google, Glanbia, Horkan Garden Centres and O’Brien’s Wine, Beer & Spirits.

"There is a massive opportunity for overall growth in the Irish market through digital with both local and international reach," said Buckley.

"We need to recognise that consumer needs and expectations are evolving at a massive pace. Consumers expect to find products and services online both web and mobile. If businesses don’t have a digital presence they will miss the opportunity to serve existing customers and acquire new customers."
