Rafael Agapito, a 27-year-old Brazilian living in Dublin since 2005 (and former Manager of the ‘No Name’ cocktail bar on Dublin’s Fade Street), has decided to use Ireland as a European test-market to launch his new brand of Cachaça, Fubá Classica, the first in a range of spirits under the Fubá name.
Mainly used in the Brazilian national cocktail, the Caipirinha, 1.5 billion litres of Brazilian Cachaça are produced every year with exports totalling 150 million litres, claims Rafael.
Here in Ireland, some 2,500 litres are consumed each year, he adds.
Launched in Dublin’s Dylan Hotel, Fubá is made on a single estate outside Sao Paulo, the economic capital of Brazil and the small batch-distilled Cachaça is the first of its kind on the Irish market.
Future variants, including a spiced Cachaça and a limited-edition aged Cachaça, are planned to create an exciting product range focused on quality and sustainability from production to glass, says Rafael, a regular cocktail competition winner who has has represented Ireland on the international stage at the Bartenders’ Association cocktail competition in China, The Havana Club Cocktail Grand Prix in Cuba and in the Jameson International Cocktail Competition 2010.
Fubá is a family enterprise with Rafael at the helm here while his brothers co-ordinate things on the ground back home in Brazil.
“I’ve worked in the Irish drinks industry for the last six years,” he says, “I know the Irish consumer and have made a lot of great contacts here. Ireland was the natural place to launch the product.”
It’s being distributed by Richmond Marketing and will focus its marketing efforts on Ireland’s top cocktail bars.
After Ireland, Fubá hopes to find distribution channels throughout the rest of Europe.
