President Michael D Higgins planted a native holly tree in the grounds of Áras an Uachtaráin to commemorate Spar National Tree Day, which took place last month.

The initiative by the Tree Council of Ireland, supported by Spar, encourages primary school children across the country to take the pledge and plant a tree.

As part of this year’s campaign, 1,500 native Irish holly tree saplings were sent to primary school children across the country to encourage them to connect directly with nature.
