Porterhouse Cork opens

Cork Hurling star Sean Og O’Hailpin welcomed The Porterhouse Brewing Company to Cork as he cracked open the first cask there with the help of Miss Universe Cork Katriona O Mahony.

The Lord Mayor of Cork Mr John Buttimer officially opens the new craft beer bar tonight and the bar, a joint venture project between The Porterhouse Group and Eddie Nicholson of the Mardyke Entertainment Complex, will serve an array of Porterhouse beers as well as craft beers from the various Irish and foreign breweries from the US to Scandinavia.

The Porterhouse Brewing Company has been 17 years in business; producing three stouts, three ales and three lagers, the pub has grown to become one of the most popular and talked-about bar chains in Ireland, winning the award for the best stout in the world with its Plain Porter.

This title was bestowed again for the same stout last year. For any stout to win such a prestigious accolade twice represents a highly unusual achievement.

“We recognise Cork’s great brewing tradition and holding out as the last city with multiple breweries, we are looking forward to being part of that proud tradition,” stated Managing Director and Co-Founder of The Porterhouse Brewing Company Oliver Hughes.

The Group now has seven bars, four in Dublin, one in Cork, one in Covent Garden London as well as the Fraunces Tavern near Wall Street, New York, the oldest Tavern in Manhattan.

The Group also consists of three tapas bars with a fourth just opened last November in London’s Covent Garden.
A brewery and bottling line produces the equivalent of 17 million pints and now the Dingle Distillery completes the company’s portfolio.

With a turnover of €34 million the company currently provides full and part-time employment for 350 staff.
