Over 75% of students prefer sustainable business, research shows

Over three quarters of Irish students are more likely to buy from a business that aims to reduce its food waste, according to research from Too Good To Go.
As thousands of students head to university this autumn, the global social impact company has unveiled its official Freshers’ Food Survival Guide.
Designed to combat the cost-of-living crunch and tackle campus food waste, the guide equips new students with simple, actionable strategies to eat well, spend less, and keep edible food out of the bin.
The Freshers’ Food Survival Playbook
- Use Your Freezer: Yellow-sticker supermarket markdowns, bakery bread, and batch-cooked meals are student gold. Slice fresh bread before freezing to thaw only what you need each morning.
- See What You Have Before You Shop: Check your cupboards before hitting the store. Planning meals around existing ingredients prevents duplicate purchases and cuts unnecessary spending.
- Decode the Dates: Understand the difference between food labels. “Use By” relates to food safety, but “Best Before” is simply a measure of quality. Look, smell, and taste before tossing out perfectly good food.
- Organise the Communal Fridge: Label your items clearly and designate an “Eat Me First” shelf in shared kitchens so forgotten ingredients get eaten instead of going bad.
- Score Cheap Local Eats: Download the free Too Good To Go app to rescue “Surprise Bags” of delicious surplus food from local cafes, bakeries, and supermarkets at up to 70% off the retail price.
Machaela O’Leary, key accounts lead, Too Good To Go, commented: “Starting university is a major life milestone, but managing an independent food budget for the first time can feel overwhelming.
“Eating well shouldn’t mean breaking the bank or relying solely on late-night takeaways. Our Freshers’ Survival Guide proves that saving money and living sustainably go hand in hand.”
