Do they really understand what it takes to run a pub successfully in these times? It’s not true to say that all pubs are doing their utmost in trying to attract customers. I can cite at least one example from last Autumn of a Dublin pub set amongst a row of competitor pubs that was empty one lunchtime when all the others were relatively full.

Actually, that’s not quite true. Besides myself, there was one person sitting up at the bar chatting to his friend, the underutilised barman.  That person was eating his packed lunch and drinking a coffee – purchased from the nearby Insomnia…..
