Prices for alcoholic beverages and tobacco in off-licences fell by 3.1 per cent in the year to September 2010 according to the CSO.

Prices for alcoholic beverages and tobacco in off-licences fell by 3.1 per cent in the year to September 2010 according to the CSO. This compares to an increase of 7.5 per cent in the year to September 2009. Overall prices in the off-trade increased by 0.1 per cent for alcoholic beverages and tobacco in the month of September over August.  However alcoholic beverage prices themselves remained unchanged. But alcoholic beverages in the off-trade were down 8.7 per cent in the year to September 2010. This comprised reductions in spirits prices of 9.9 per cent, wine & cider prices of 7.7 per cent and beer prices of 9.2 per cent.
In the month of September off-trade price increases were recorded for beer of 0.8 per cent and for spirits of 0.4 per cent while a price decrease was recorded for wine & cider of 0.4 per cent.
In the on-trade, soft drinks and mineral waters prices decreased in the month by 0.2 per cent  and spirits 0.1 per cent, as did wine & cider.
On-trade beer prices were three per cent down on the year to September 2010 and spirits prices were 2.8 per cent down as were wine & cider prices. Soft drinks & mineral water prices were down 0.6 per cent.
In terms of previous month, on-trade beer prices remained unchanged, wine & cider prices together with spirits prices fell by 0.1 per cent while soft drinks & mineral water prices dropped 0.2 per cent.
Nightclub admission prices fell by 3.6 per cent in the year to September and by 0.4 per cent in September over August 2010.
