Retailers in the HSE West area Sligo/Leitrim/West Cavan were the subject of unwelcome adverse publicity in the wake of 17 test purchases in Castlebaldwin, Grange, Collooney, Sligo Town, Carrick-on-Suir, Drumod, Rooskey and Leitrim Village which led to nine sales (53%) to the volunteer child who was 16 years old.

Despite the fact that the sample of 17 outlets is not necessarily representative of the number and style of outlets in the area, it is not good that retailers and their staff are not displaying a greater level of knowledge of the responsibilities to check ID/age before selling what could be a very expensive and embarrassing pack of cigarettes. Remember to check age and seek ID.
