Ireland’s grocery trade rumour mill has been operating at full throttle of late with speculation that Dunnes Stores has purchased Donnybrook Fair.

However Donnybrook Fair owner Joe Doyle has resolutely told ShelfLife there is “no truth” behind said rumours.

While he confirmed that the circulating rumours had reached his ears, Doyle said he did not know how and where they had originated.

He added that Donnybrook Fair has no plans to sell. Instead he said the group is “very happy” as is, and that a full renovation is actually in the pipeline for its Morehampton Road store in Dublin 4.

While Doyle was unable to reveal the investment this would entail at this stage when the budget has not been fully finalised, he confirmed that the whole store would be completely refitted, and that the job would hopefully be in hand by the end of the summer.

According to The Irish Times, Donnybrook Fair turned back to profitability in the year to the end of January 2017 following “improved trading” across its retail units.

The chain recorded a profit after tax last year of €185,133. This reversed its loss-making position from the previous year when a loss of €390,883 was recorded.

The high-end grocery chain has five stores across Dublin, one in Wicklow, and a cookery school at its flagship Donnybrook store.
