There’s no greater spud than one grown on Irish soil, according to 96% of Irish people. This is in response to the Keogh’s Irish Spud Sentiment (KISS) Index, which launched today in honour of National Potato Day (2 October).

Keogh’s Farm, Ireland’s favourite potato and crisp farmers, conducted a survey in September amongst 555 Irish adults (85% female and 15% male) to find out more about the home grown sentiment towards the humble spud. Our national vegetable faired very favourably with 75% of survey respondents naming potatoes as their favourite mealtime carbohydrate and 91% claiming that if they only had one meal left on earth, spuds would feature prominently on the plate!

Despite declining retail sales* of fresh potatoes in Ireland over the past decade, Keogh’s KISS Index respondents indicated that 60% consume potatoes 2 – 3 times weekly and 29% eat them in some guise every single day. Roosters are the favourite, and most consumed** variety for Irish consumers (55%) followed by Maris Piper (14%) and (13%) Queens. Most importantly, they taste best when cooked by our mothers according to 35%.

Tom Keogh, managing director of Keogh’s Farm said the company is “very pleased with the announcement today that Minister Coveney is backing Bord Bia’s potato promotion initiative, ‘More than a bit on the side’, over the next three years, a campaign which we fully support.”
