Lidl Ireland has far exceeded it’s €1 million fundraising target for the Barretstown charity. Following a successful three year partnership, Lidl revealed that the total to be donated to the charity is €1.2 million which will go towards providing programmes that are medically endorsed and designed to give children back their confidence and self-esteem.

In further good news, Lidl will be extending the partnership for another two years and is striving to meet a similar fundraising target by 2018.

Over the past three years, Lidl’s 3,500 strong workforce have held fundraising events across the country, donating in excess of 7,200 volunteer hours of their time on over 170 events. In addition, the retailer has supported Barretstown by building ‘The Lidl Activity Room’, a new activity space designed to enhance the much loved horse riding activity at Barretstown.

Fundraising activities have been taking place in local communities across Ireland over the past three years, spearheaded by a team of ‘Barretstown Buddies’, Lidl employees who champion the cause in their store. They have pulled out all the stops to surpass their initial target of €1 million, including ‘Twisted for Barretstown’, a fun run for families every year in Co. Tipperary, and the annual Christmas Trolley Dash competition.

Amy Selvin, a Barretstown Buddy based in Newbridge, said the achievement could not have been possible without so much public support and thanked customers for supporting the fundraising events.

Barretstown offers free, specially designed camps and programmes that are designed for children and their families living with a serious illness – all supported behind the scenes by 24 hour on site medical and nursing care. Each year it costs over €4.8 million to run the programmes at Barretstown, 97% of which must be raised through the fundraising efforts of individuals, community groups and corporate supporters.
