Lidl has commenced its long-mooted incursion into the US grocery market this week, with the opening of stores at 10 locations in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. The brand’s arrival has not gone unnoticed, with iconic stores such as Wal-Mart, Target and Kroger moving to lower prices ahead of the launch.

Brendan Proctor, CEO of Lidl in the USA, speaks at the store's grand opening

The low-cost, no-frills, own-brand stores have been a hit with customers all over the world in recent years, and bosses say they want to translate that same in-store experience to US customers. They’re slightly behind the curve, however; Aldi has had a presence in the country since 1976, and has 1,600 outlets and plans for hundreds more.

Lidl plans to have up to 100 stores across the USA within the next year.
